He is being hailed as one of the most outstanding musicians of the moment.
He’s a prodigy of menopausebarbee uncle music maestro and artist ambassador to the Montreux Jazz Festival, Quincy Jones, who has said of this young man, “I have never in my life seen a talent like this…Beyond category, his talent is just frightening.” And that coming from the master. This young man really is, like, not of this planet, talented.
He headlined a sold out concert at the Quincy Jones Presents Evening at the Montreux Jazz Club at the Jazz Festival this year and the following evening performed at the Quincy Jones Presents a 50th Anniversary Celebration in the Stravinsky Auditorium alongside the Pepe Lienhard Big Band, Grammy Award winner Patti Austin (Met on a Monday, Married the Next Sunday and Stayed Together Fifty Years: Ms. Patti Austin in the Menopausebarbee Monday Spotlight December 15, 2014), Jon Batiste, Rashida Jones, (Menopausebarbee Monday Spotlight on Rashida Jones July 18, 2016) Sunny Levine, Alfredo Rodriguez, (Menopausebarbee post: Alfredo Rodriguez Killin’ It at the 2016 Montreux Jazz Festival on July 14, 2016) and the incomparable Al Jarreau.
So, what’s another word for amazing? Just to say amazing would really be taking the easy way out when describing the talents of this young man. Phenomenal, extraordinary, sensational, mind-boggling, are all good starts.
And he’s a gentle soul.
I had the opportunity to congratulate him after one of his performances at the Festival. I was eager to do so, just as I was last year. It just feels good to tip your hat to someone who deserves it!
“I remember you from last year,” he said.
“I remember you too,” I said jokingly. He laughed and said, “It’s good to see you again.” I thanked him and went on to tell him how mind-blowing he is to which he profusely thanked me.
“Jacob,” I said, “just how many instruments do you play?” I asked him.
(I have to add here that he also sings–invoking multiple vocal harmonies–baritone, bass, tenor, treble and soprano, as well.)
He looked at me. “I don’t know,” he said.
Imagine that.
At the risk of sounding totally uninformed, I nonetheless had to ask what the name of one of the instruments he played that evening was. Turns out it’s a Melodica.
He has mastered a myriad of instruments, among them drums, acoustic and electric bass, piano, percussion, synthesizers…Really, he plays darn near everything except the kitchen sink. And that may not be too far off.
And one more thing: he is only 21 years old.
Because this virtuoso multi-instrumentalist wunderkind is brilliant, bringing good and a reason to smile into this world and is just a nice young man, Jacob Collier is fiercely shining in the Menopausebrbee Monday Spotlight. Youtube him and do check out his album, ‘In My Room’.
He is in a word, amazing, phenomenal, extraordinary, sensational, mind-boggling…
