I Want My Last Check to Bounce!
Admit it... We are basically creatures of habit. I was talking to a girlfriend the other night, cuddled deep in the comfort of my bed. The television was on mute. The book I am nearly finished reading, Hidden Girl rest at my side. My daughter, Taryn bopped in and out of my bedroom asking me questions about her word Roots quiz, and shared typical teen-age girl gossip. I glanced at the television to see if Dr. Phil's program would dictate me abruptly ending my phone conversation, however, it was of no interest, so I continued to babble. My friend told me her life has morphed into the movie, Groundhog Day. For those who have never seen this 1993 flick, the story is about Bill Murray, who plays Phil Connors, an arrogant and egocentric TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in, finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again.
It's a sad fact, but I find too many people, myself included get caught in life's time loop. We follow the same daily patterns, not realizing each day really is a GIFT and that is why it called the PRESENT. We must remember to live out loud, or our life will become mundane. Tick Tock goes the clock, Christmas is over, New Year Resolutions have failed and re-hailed, and as of yesterday, Spring has Sprung! Before we know it, summer will be in our rear-view mirror. So today, I challenge you to break the routine. Say yes to an invitation, seek out new friendships, go to the gym at a different time, take a cooking class, start a book club, invite an old friend for happy hour, browse the bookstore, or try a new coffee shop.
My wise Auntie Barbara and I recently visited in Scottsdale. This summer, she and her husband will visit their 50th country. As she drove me to the airport, last week, she said, "Dana, when I die, I want my last check to bounce! And when I get on the plane, I want to go left, and not to the right." We had a hearty laugh, but my aunt has found the secret to my favorite quote,
"Live each day as if it's your last, because one day you will be right!"
