For those that know me well, there is nothing I appreciate much more than a good old fashioned letter. Starting at the age of 9, I received a diary from my friend, Elizabeth for a birthday gift and like
Forrest Gump when he started to run, I just couldn’t cease with journal entries. Every night when I was tucked in bed, with my night light, I recalled the days events. I now have volumes of diaries – over 25 years worth written in every single day. Thanks Liz! O.K. maybe I’m a little OCD, but there is something so tangible about writing, expressing, and keeping a history or as I prefer to say herstory of life.
I also keep letters, cards and mementos. I believe Realtor extraordinaire, Carmen Gayton wins the prize for sending out the most Thank You’s! I swear if she sneezes and I say bless you, I’m bound to get a thank you. Seriously – Carmen has taught me the value of acknowledging what heart felt appreciation looks like.
As I was reviewing my box of treasured “love notes”, I pulled one from my uncle, Federal Judge Richard Jones. We have the deepest connection and we tease each other mercilessly. He claims he is looking forward to seeing me next week. It’s been 40 days and he gave up “Ugly People” for Lent! Uncle Richard gave me this treasured letter for my birthday. I keep on my desk because the words the thoughts are so powerful. They have helped me through many days. I am copying the letter in it’s entirety to send words of encouragement to my son, Brett as he starts his new life in Chicago.
Some of his wisdom is to good share only with Brett, so here you go!
“One of your birthday gifts is this letter; the other is the book, “Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart. I share all of this because what is in this letter contains guiding lights that have helped me survive all these years. Like Uncle Lloyd used to say, there is no challenge in being young, the real test is getting old. You are far from old, and your youthful approach to life and creative mind are truly the keys to a a long life. I hope you can use the gifts of wisdom that I have collected in this letter to help you as you trek through your journey in life. Practice each with love, and one day you will be able to say: No regrets, no apologies necessary and nobody around that I forgot to tell I love you.”
“Don’t Worry about people from your past, there is a reason they didn’t make it to your future.”

“EVERY SINGLE THING YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH, EVERY SINGLE MOMENT YOU’VE COME THROUGH, WERE TO PREPARE YOU FOR THIS MOMENT RIGHT NOW. IMAGINE WHAT YOU CAN DO FROM THIS DAY FORWARD WITH WHAT YOU KNOW RIGHT NOW. NOW YOU GET THAT YOU ARE THE CREATOR OF YOUR DESTINY. HOW MUCH MORE DO YOU GET TO DO? HOW MUCH MORE DO YOU GET TO BE? HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE DO YOU GET TO BLESS , SIMPLY BY YOUR MERE EXISTENCE? WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR MOMENT? HOW WILL YOU SEIZE THE MOMENT? NO ONE ELSE CAN DANCE YOUR DANCE, NO ONE ELSE CAN SING YOUR SONG. NO ONE ELSE CAN WRITE YOUR STORY. WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO, BEGINS RIGHT NOW. ” LISA NICHOLS, THE SECRET
