Slavery to Bravery to Beautiful and Beyond…
I apologize in advance as I know I do not have the words or wisdom to express the content of what I need to convey in this post.
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of joining my boyfriend on an East Coast excursion charity event, The Brain Ball supporting Alzheimer’s disease. The irony of paying witness to people with memory loss weighed heavily on me the next two days as we toured the new African American History Museum. 48 hours proved not enough time to fully encompass all the wondrous history from slavery, bravery, beauty and beyond. We must remember, never to forget.
My post should stop here with just a MUST SEE exclamation point! However, I must entice you more.
Where can you find baby handcuffs used during the slave trade, a Klu Klux Klan mask, the bible from Nat Turner, an enslaved African American who led a rebellion of slaves and free blacks? Where can you look at original Madame Alexander hair potions and lotions that kept our kinky roots fried, dyed, and laid to the side or the dress Rosa Parks wore when arrested for taking the wrong seat on in the wrong section of the bus? How about the rusted bucket Martin Luther King soaked his feet in after the long walk in Selma, and footage from comedic greats – Flip Wilson to Richard Pryor, Chuck Berry’s Cadillac, the George Clinton Funkadelic Parliament Space Ship and so much more including the dress that Whitney Houston wore, Michael Jackson’s beaded attire and footage of the commencement of President Obama – yes, all under one roof? https://nmaahc.si.edu/
As the quote from Maya Angelou took my breath away, “I am the dream and the hope of the slave,” I am reminded of how blessed we are from the sacrifices of so many.
