Looking up at this street sign in Bielsko Biala, Poland a few days ago, it clearly dawned on me that if I didn’t know where the hotel was I’d be in big trouble.
I imagined myself just suddenly waking up and finding myself here. Which way would I go to reach my destination? What if I chose ul. Szerok when I should have eased my way on down ul Czotgistów?
How far would I walk in the wrong direction?
What if darkness began to settle around me?
What if a couple trouble makers headed my direction and threatened to do what they do best—namely start some trouble?
What if I needed to use a toilet and there was nary a public facility/gas station/restaurant in view?
And then . . . what if I started to panic?
Just in that moment I smiled because it dawned on me that these ‘what ifs’ are the way it is in life. All the time. We can be standing beneath a street sign seemingly imprinted with gobbledygook or just trying to Figure It Out on the daily.
The answers are not always immediate and we don’t always start off in the right direction. But because we all have an an instinctive fear of not being able to act or think normally in order to keep it moving, somehow we find our way as we march through unchartered territory.
We march on and we find our way.
