... the tales of two sisters

Dana lives in Seattle, and Tracie lives in Germany. We are businesswomen, writers and humorists. We write about life, dating, and today's modern women.

M is for: Mom, What is Masturbation?

May it is.

Finally.

I am so looking forward to the May flowers after the April showers. And showers. And showers. And showers. . .

Aside from pastel colors, sun, smiles, blue skies, sun, delicious fruit and sun, there are in fact other events associated with the month of May; one of them being as Dani said yesterday, my niece and nephew beginning their summer break from school and the University.

Kids are an interesting phenomena. I know. Not only have I had one, I sometimes feel like one myself– just not often enough.

Anyway, all this kid stuff brings to mind a conversation Dani and I had with our friend Kelly last December, who is the adoring mother of Drea, a pretty young thing who is a friend of my niece, Mädchen (aka as Taryn).

Presently, I can’t recall what we three grown women were talking about that moment we all embraced, but with me having arrived in Seattle just a couple of days before for the holidays, and with life getting in the way of Kelly and Dana finding the time to get caught up as often as they would have liked the past months, the conversation inevitably consisted of “Gosh! Does time fly by!” and “How tall is Drea now?” “And what about Taryn?”

So we talked about how the kids had grown in the past year, what they hoped Santa would bring even though they only believed kinda sorta, and then Kelly cut to the chase and shared a conversation she had with her daughter.

Her 12 year old daughter.

They were in the car, headed towards somewhere street and all of a sudden Drea asks: “Mom, what is masturbation?”

Driving along, minding your own business, as carefree as you can possibly be at any one peaceful point in time on a good day, to get suddenly blind sided with that – well it’s enough to make you want to make a U–turn right back to the womb!! Our kids, our babies aren’t supposed to ask us that!

Do you hear me babies? Don’t do this to us!

Although she was choking, gagging and screaming for help on the inside, Kelly cooly replied, “Having sex with yourself.”

And then there was light silence.

Geez.

Kids today are a lost paradise. Whatever happened to innocence? Naiveté? Purity? And just being afraid as hell to ask your Mother something like that?!

I just hung up from my ‘daily’ with my Mother. I asked her how she would have responded if I would’ve asked her that at twelve.
She said she would have passed out.

My sentiments exactly.

Now it’s your turn. How would you answer the question?

P.S. There is no accompanying picture for today’s post.
