Try this today, smile at a stranger and tell me if they don’t return the expression.
I have always known that a smile is contagious, however, I recently discovered how valuable this simple commodity truly is.
I have a dear girlfriend, for anonymity sake, I will call her “Olivia”. Olivia is beautiful, funny, smart, independently wealthy, athletic, and an all around great catch. But Olivia is shy and she doesn’t dole out as much as a grin to strangers. Olivia has been single for three and a half years and found her available choices for mates to be “slim pickings”. A few months ago, I was on a flight and sat next to a nice man, I’ll call him “Dan” and I smiled at him and we started chatting. Soon I discovered that Dan had lost his wife in a tragic auto accident. The more Dan and I chatted, I found him engaging, successful, and although he had suffered a tremendous loss, he was, as cupid would have it, a perfect match for Olivia. Sure enough, they met and sparks flew, they have been inseparable for two months. This introduction was all made just by a simple smile.
Last week while in LA sitting in our hotel bar I spotted a lone man smiling over at our intimidating table of 8 friends. We were a lively group, laughing, telling stories, and the spirits were flowing. I noticed the man kept smiling, and after an hour or so, it was evident he was not waiting on anyone. I flagged him over and called out, “Come on and join us, you know you want to.” Soon enough “Stan” was in our fold laughing, and enjoying the camaraderie and company of new friends. We discovered Stan had a background in hotel development and was a perfect liaison for a business opportunity with one of my friends. Again, this connection would not have been made if Stan hadn’t made eye contact and smiled.
I am more convinced than ever that the universe is open and a smile really is contagious. So the next time you are in line at a supermarket, on the treadmill at the gym, or holding the bank door for a stranger, make contact and SMILE, the results could be limitless!
